Bread and Butter Pickles
Ingredients:
- 24 cucumbers
- 12 onions
- 1/2 cup salt
- 1 quart vinegar
- 5 cups sugar
- 2 teaspoon white mustard seed
- 2 teaspoons celery seed
- 2 teaspoons turmeric
Instructions:
- Slice cucumbers and onions.
- Sprinkle with 1/2 cup salt and let stand about 3 hours.
- Put vinegar, sugar and spices into pot and bring to a hard boil.
- Drain cucumbers and onions.
- When vinegar starts to boil add cucumbers and onions, bring to scalding point.
- Pack in jars and seal while hot.
- After the jars cool, store them in a cool and dark place for at least 2 months.
