Bread and Butter Pickles

Ingredients:

  • 24 cucumbers
  • 12 onions
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 quart vinegar
  • 5 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoon white mustard seed
  • 2 teaspoons celery seed
  • 2 teaspoons turmeric

Instructions:

  • Slice cucumbers and onions.
  • Sprinkle with 1/2 cup salt and let stand about 3 hours.
  • Put vinegar, sugar and spices into pot and bring to a hard boil.
  • Drain cucumbers and onions.
  • When vinegar starts to boil add cucumbers and onions, bring to scalding point.
  • Pack in jars and seal while hot.
  • After the jars cool, store them in a cool and dark place for at least 2 months.
