Knowledge check: Do you know your hitches?

So you have something to haul with your tractor or truck?

A 3-point hitch makes such a job easier. But there's definitely plenty to learn before you load it up and haul it out. We'll take a look at what you should consider in choosing the hitch and implements to get the job done.

3-POINT HITCHES
A 3-point hitch is used to connect implements, such as mowers, tillers, and more, to a tractor. Hitches include two hydraulic lift arms to lower or raise it. The top link keeps it in the needed position, either level or tilted.

They’re usually a permanent attachment to the rear of the tractor. Pins on the ends of the arms and on the top link connect the hitch to the implement.

Why use a 3-point hitch?
Using one transfers the implement's resistance and weight to the tractor's drive wheels. This gives it traction it wouldn't have without one, given the power and weight. A 3-point hitch can also help reduce fuel consumption.

HITCH CATEGORIES
Bigger implements need stronger lift arms. Categories differentiate which one you need for the task, and you can find the hitch category by checking the lift arm pin diameter, from 5/8-inch to 2 inches. The larger the tractor, the higher the category.

Category 0 can use an array of implements, such as:

  • Back blades
  • Cultivators
  • Plows
  • Thatchers
  • Tillers

TRACTOR POWER:As much as 20 HP
TOP LINK PIN DIAMETER:5/8-inch
LIFT ARM PIN DIAMETER:5/8-inch
LOWER HITCH SPACING:20 inches

Category 1
Compact and subcompact tractors have Category 1 hitches, but not all Category 1 implements work with all Category 1 hitches. An example: a 6-foot Category 1 heavy-duty rear blade at more than 300 pounds, which wouldn't work on a subcompact tractor, but would be fine on a compact. Compacts weigh more and have more frame structure than a subcompact, allowing for bigger jobs, despite similar horsepower. A subcompact is designed for lighter duty.

Category 1 can use an array of implements, including:

  • Backhoes
  • Blades and scrapers
  • Cultivators and tillers
  • Harrows and rakes
  • Mowers
  • Scoops and carryalls

TRACTOR POWER:20-45 HP
TOP LINK PIN DIAMETER:3/4-inch
LIFT ARM PIN DIAMETER:7/8-inch
LOWER HITCH SPACING:28 inches

A word about limited Category 1 hitches
Smaller Category 1 subcompact tractors have less ground clearance and lifting arm travel. They'll have the same mounting dimensions and as a standard Category 1, but implements may need more clearance than a limited Category 1 can offer.

Category 2
Now we're getting heavy-duty, with fewer options. Most implements come from dealers, not tractor stores. You can change most Category 1 implements for Category 2 use by switching pins or by adding bushings.

Category 2 can use an array of implements, including:

  • Back blades
  • Box scrapers
  • Liquid sprayers
  • Planters
  • Rakes

TRACTOR POWER:40-100 HP
TOP LINK PIN DIAMETER:1 inch
LIFT ARM PIN DIAMETER:1 1/8-inch
LOWER HITCH SPACING:34 inches

Category 3
Most folks won't have use for Category 3 and beyond. Be aware of the Category 3N hitch, which has the same pin diameters but a narrower lift spacing of 32 inches. You can convert 3 to 3N with quick hitches.

Category 3 hitch implements include:

  • Field cultivators
  • Row-crop cultivators

TRACTOR POWER:80-225 HP
TOP LINK PIN DIAMETER:1 1/4inch
LIFT ARM PIN DIAMETER:1 7/16-inch
LOWER HITCH SPACING:40 inches

Category 4
They're installed on heavy-duty, full-sized trucks. Adding a weight-distributing system can boost towing capacity to 14,000 pounds.

Category 4 implements include:

  • Boats
  • Large Campers
  • Toy Haulers

TRACTOR POWER: More Than 180 HP
TOP LINK PIN DIAMETER:1 3/4inch
LIFT ARM PIN DIAMETER:2 inches
LOWER HITCH SPACING:48 inches

Quick hitches
They allow an operator to connect implements without leaving his or her seat. Not all implements are compatible with a quick hitch, but adapter brackets can help. Quick hitches fit standard categories and mount to the 3-point hitch on a tractor. Some hitch makers have products specific to their brand. Aftermarket brands also manufacture quick hitches.
