Southern Cornbread Ingredients: Shortening, 4 Tbsp. Egg, 1 Baking soda, 1/2 tsp. Self-rising cornmeal, 2 cups Buttermilk, 1-3/4 cups Directions: Preheat your oven to 450 degrees F. Melt the shortening in a cast iron skillet . Set aside. In a large bowl, beat the egg thoroughly. Add the baking soda, buttermilk, and cornmeal. Mix well. Add 2 Tbsp. of the shortening that you previously melted. If the batter looks easy to pour, then it is ready for the next step. If it appears to be too thick, then add a little water. Pour your cornbread batter into your hot skillet . Bake for approximately 20 minutes or until your cornbread is golden brown.
